I have decided that my online footprint has grown too big. I have been deactivating accounts, closing profiles, and making myself disappear a little. I don’t need all the apps and sites tracking me and having my info anymore. Though I will keep Facebook and subsequently other apps and such I use everyday, but I am trying to fix my overgrown internet presence. I want a lot more privacy. I would love to get a Blackphone, but that is a little out of my price range.
Anyone else feel this way lately or am I losing it?

Ever since the whole internet of things and where tech passively listens to everything you say in the hopes you are going to ask it a question. Reverting to some old tech or no tech would be fairly nice where you can

My facebook has been deactivated for over 11 months now. Other than oppo and talking to two friends on gchat, I have almost no online presence. You’re not losing it.

I’ve always felt that way, to some extent, and try to keep my online presences somewhat limited and separate, and use tools to keep the tracking of me to a minimum. Clearly, Facebook and Google know tons about me, and I’m trusting them (in the interest of their business and shareholders) to keep that information appropriately private. That’s probably very naive, but I don’t seem to be willing to give up the connectedness that their services provide.
I thought, for a second, this might be a Goodbye, OPPO post. Glad it’s not.

That’s why this place and LALD are pretty much the only places I’m active. F all that other stuff.

In terms of online presence, I really only use Facebook and Oppo. I have a Skype account that I only use to call my girlfriend, a few emails, but I’m not as forum active as I was in high school (wooo gaming forums).

Hell, no.

Oh no no never. I think I would literally die if I didn’t have Oppo. I just realized that there are a lot of site that have my data and information and such that I really don’t want to.
But you are right, FB and Google we just have to trust them, no matter how naive.

YouTube is Google and Instagram is Facebook, so there’s that.

I don’t think its paranoid, but I’m perfectly happy to forgo some advanced features to reduce my footprint. I don’t have my “ok google” turned on with my phone for example, and I don’t ever turn on my GPS unless I need too and I opt out or turn off any tracking features on apps or sites. Google allows you to be very selective about a lot of your data and you can opt out of a lot. Lastly, I just don’t have a lot of info out there, as kinja, google products and instagram are my only social sources.

Trust them or go off the grid.
Every time I’m away from OPPO for an extended stretch, and then I come back, I realize how much I enjoy the discussions and value the community here.

Oh good, I thought I might start making walls or yarn conspiracies.

Yeah I understand that. If I didn’t require the internet most of the time, I would be rocking a Motorola Razor.

So I only use Oppo, Facebook, and Google then. That’s not much, I don’t think.

Yeah, I have to trust them just for Oppo at the very least.

That sounds about where I am headed.

Nah you’re not going crazy. The nice thing is I really only talk to friends now, cause they’ve got my phone number. I thought about reactivating my facebook when I moved back with my parents to look up this girl I went to high school with then I was like nah, not worth it, so it remains inactive.

In the scheme of things, and compared with most people, it’s really not!

Yeah... There are just so many people I only talk to with FB unfortunately.

HA! I wanna see that!

I guess in your case I’d keep it, or give people your number or set up a google account and use that to chat.

Ick, I’d rather keep FB tbh.
